Meet Stacey Desautel Gonzales

Artist. Educator. Founder.

Stacey Desautel Gonzales is the heart of Art Room 509. With nearly three decades of experience teaching art throughout Spokane and the Inland Northwest, she has helped thousands of students find confidence and joy through creativity.

Her love of art began early in Prosser, Washington, where she sold her first pieces while still in middle school. Over the years, she has explored nearly every medium including painting, ceramics, printmaking, jewelry-making, textile art, watercolor, and oil painting. Stacey has exhibited her work in galleries throughout the Pacific Northwest and designed a public mural for the City of Spokane, created in collaboration with local students from juvenile detention centers.

As a dedicated teacher, Stacey has worked at Southridge High School in Kennewick, as well as Spokane’s Salk Middle School, Havermale High School, Shadle Park High School, and several elementary schools including Woodridge, Finch, Browne, Westview, Longfellow, Willard, Hutton, and Hamblen. She has also taught at Eastern Washington University, guiding future educators and artists in their creative journeys.

Today, Stacey continues to bring her passion for art and teaching together at Art Room 509, creating a studio that welcomes everyone and celebrates creativity in all its forms.

Frequently Asked Questions

What Should I Wear to Class?

We recommend wearing something comfortable that you don’t mind getting a little messy — probably not white! Sleeves that can be rolled or pushed up are ideal, especially for hands-on projects like painting, pottery, or printmaking.

We provide aprons and encourage everyone to wear them, but art has a way of finding its way onto clothes — so dress accordingly and come ready to create!

Can I bring guests?

Yes, but they will have to sign up for a class as well.

What is your cancellation policy?

Art Room 509 in Spokane has a no refund policy for classes: all sales are final. If you cancel at least 24 hours in advance, you can apply the payment toward a studio credit valid for 60 days. For cancellations made within 24 hours or no shows, you may still request a credit, but a $12 fee per person will be deducted from your balance.

Where should I park?

Free parking on the street and in the parking lot. Parkwater Schoolhouse is currently not wheelchair accessible.

Are there discounts?

At Art Room 509, we’re proud to support those who serve our community and invest in education. Military, First Responders & Educators receive 15% off with valid proof of service or employment. (Includes active duty, veterans, police, fire, EMTs, and public/private school educators.)
